Heritage Tour Guide

Royal Gunpowder Mills

Royal Gunpowder Mills is a heritage attraction with lively and engaging visitor, learning and volunteering programmes. In addition to telling the story of the most important site in Europe for the manufacture of gunpowder, areas of our historic 170 acre site are a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

Visitors can choose to take the 30 minute tractor trailer guided tour around the 170 acre site, where they can see and learn about RGM’s science, nature and history. There are also special access walking tours and occasional introductory talks requiring volunteer guides.

As a guide you will pass on the wonders of the history, science and nature of the site including the industrial history of the buildings as you travel around the tour route.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • To assemble the party and determine their specific needs.
  • Once on board the trailer, explain the purpose of the tour, say how long it will take and give the short safety talk.
  • On the way round the site, communicate important features and facts for the enjoyment and education of the visitors.
  • To help the visitors make sense of the history and natural environment.
  •  Answer visitors questions and/or direct them to where they may find further information.

Benefits to volunteer

  • You will be given all the information required and will therefore have the opportunity to learn much about RGM.
  • You will gain the experience of working alongside other dedicated people whilst passing on interesting facts and providing enjoyment for the visitors.
