Malachi Place Support Assistant Volunteer - Salvation Army

Malachi Place is a pop-up hostel in Ilford which provides supported accommodation for 42 people who are experiencing homelessness.

Support assistant volunteers are integral to ensuring our clients are excellently supported at Malachi Place. You will volunteer alongside a strong team of support workers and assistant support workers to help support the clients throughout the day. Tasks may include distributing food, speaking with clients, completing welfare checks and helping run activities such as cooking class, art class, games and movie evenings.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Build strong relationships with clients and the Malachi Place staff team
  • Follow Malachi Place procedures for the effective running of the shift
  • Cooperate with colleagues and offer help and support
  • As directed by staff, fulfil tasks such as;
  • Having conversations with clients
  • Assist with welfare checks
  • Distribute food to the clients
  • Engage clients in activities, such as movie evening, games (table tennis, board games), art class, jewellery making, cooking class etc
  • Share good news stories and feedback ideas about how to make Malachi Place a great place to be
  • Communicate your availability with the volunteer coordinator, including lateness and absences

What skills do I need?

Skills, attributes, qualifications and experience

  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow guidelines and direction from Malachi Place Staff.
  • Calm under pressure and when responding to challenging behaviour.
  • Willing to work within the Christian ethos of The Salvation Army but respectful of people of all faiths, cultures and backgrounds.
  • Two references from an employer, colleague, church leader, teacher, or volunteer supervisor to cover a period of three months.
  • Average length of recruitment: Two weeks.
  • Need to be 18+

The volunteering shifts we support are as follows: Monday - Friday; 4-7pm and 7-10pm Saturday; 10-1pm, 2-5pm, 4-7pm and 7-10pm Sunday; 10-1pm, 2-5pm, 4-7pm and 7-10pm Volunteers support a 3 hour shift, ideally we like volunteers to commit to supporting one shift either weekly or fortnightly at Malachi Place, this support is greatly appreciated.
