Volunteer Choir Master – RJCC, Woodford Forest Synagogue

Jewish Care is looking to start up a choir in Redbridge but needs someone to pull it all together and lead everyone in song! We are therefore looking for a volunteer to organise and facilitate a choir/singing group.

Main tasks and responsibilities 

  • Choosing songs/compiling music.
  • Facilitating an informal choir and helping to lead the group.
  • Motivating and leading a group of singers.

  • Singing exercises the brain as well as the body and is particularly beneficial improving breathing, posture and muscle tension. 
  • Research has shown that singing can be good for you on many levels. It may help lower stress, boost immunity and lung function, enhance memory, improve mental health and help you cope with physical and emotional pain. 
  • Yours skills will uplift those who attend and help with any issues of isolation or loneliness. 

What skills do I need?

Skills, attributes, qualifications and experience

  • A musical background and/or experience.
  • Ability to confidently take charge, inspire, lead and motivate.
  • Confidently engage with a diverse range of people and enjoy helping others.
  • A strong understanding and of issues that affect people in later life.
  • Reliability, consistency and dependability.
  • Good conversational and listening skills with a clear speaking voice.
  • Patience, empathy and a non-judgemental attitude.
  • The ability to work independently but also stay within the role’s boundaries – recognising what should and shouldn’t be done and when to seek advice or report concerns.

When do I need to be available?

Morning Afternoon Evening

Time Commitment: We are happy to work around your availability. If you can commit to running a choir weekly, that would be appreciated. Otherwise, we would be grateful of a commitment of every other week. Choir will take place on a Monday or Wednesday morning from 10.30am-12.30pm. However, we are happy to be flexible, where possible, to fit in with your schedule.
