Citizens Advice Witness Service are looking for a volunteer to help out with witness service at Snaresbrook Crown Court!

Tasks and responsibilities 

  • Give witnesses and their supports emotional support, guidance and information at court (e.g. explain court procedures and legal terms, provide them with expense forms). 
  • Show witnesses and others around the courtroom before a trial so they are familiar and at ease in the environment. 
  • Carry out the paperwork necessary to record and evaluate our work. 
  • Go into the courtroom with a witness if permitted. 
  • Identify additional support to which we can signpost witnesses. 
  • Work as part of a team with other Witness Service volunteers and staff as well as liaising with court personnel.

What skills do I need?

Skills, attributes, qualifications and experience 

  • We are looking for volunteers who could commit to the training (which can take 3 months) and then 12 months as an accredited volunteer.
  • Basic IT skills to complete online training and communicate with staff by email. 
  • Friendly, reliable, empathetic volunteers with good communication skills. 
  • No prior knowledge or experience of court is required as full training and support is provided.

We are looking for volunteers who can offer one day of 9-5 per week, particularly looking for help on a Tuesday. We welcome suggestions for more flexible arrangements such as term times.
